We would like to welcome Pam Betteridge, Ruth Beck, Amanda Hickey-Leblanc, and Jocelyn Brothers who are guest staff with us today.

On behalf of all the students and staff of Montague Regional High School, we would like to welcome all reps here for Post Secondary Day. Grade Eleven students are reminded that you have access to the displays at 10:00 am. A Naval display bus including interactive presentations will be located at the ramp doors on the way to the gym.

Because it is College & University Day, your Student Council President, Rebecca Collings, will not be able to go around to all home rooms during A Block to see costumes and pumpkins. It would be greatly appreciated it if each home room could send one person down to the Cafeteria (after announcements) with the number of people dressed up and the number of people in the class, along with your pumpkin.

This will be a good opportunity for students meet with people who can answer your questions about their institutions, the application process, early admission, scholarships, etc.

Athletic Department Notices:
• Congratulations to the Ladies’ Field Hockey Team on your excellent performance in winning the Silver medal last evening. What a great effort you gave throughout the whole season. A special thank you to Mrs. MacKinnon for coaching and working with the girls. Thank you to the students, teachers and parents who were awesome in their support. Your cheers and school spirit were heard by all!
• The Men’s Volleyball team lost a close match last evening to Bluefield. Next action is on Saturday at 10:00 am here in Montague against Charlottetown Rural. Playoffs for both Men and Women begin next week.
• Members of the Men’s Soccer Team must be ready for your picture at 12:00 noon in the gym. Have your uniform on!
• Members of the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Ladies Field Hockey Teams are asked to return your uniforms to your coaches and/or Helena Stewart on Monday during lunch break in the gym area.
• The following students were named to either the All Star Team or to participate in the All Star Game: Jenny Beck and Hannah Hameline as 2nd Team All Stars for Women’s Volleyball (Nov. 10 at 5:30 pm at UPEI), Darren Lundrigan, Connor Lea and Brett Byrne as 1st All Star Team for Men’s Soccer (Nov. 3 at 7:00 pm at UPEI), Jolisa Hume as 1st All Star for Women’s Soccer (Nov. 3 at 5:30 pm at UPEI), and Greg Fitzpatrick will participate in the Men’s Volleyball All Star Game on November 10 at 7:00 pm at UPEI.

Yearbooks orders will be taken starting tonight at Parent Teacher Interviews. You must order and pay for your yearbook now and they will arrive in June. No extra yearbooks will be ordered.

Students, please remind your parents/guardians of Parent Teacher Interviews being held this evening and tomorrow. Teachers will be available to meet with parents in the gym from 6:00 to 8:30 this evening and from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 to 3:00 pm tomorrow.

We encourage all students to have a safe long weekend (no classes Friday) and to take great care if you are planning activities on Friday or Saturday evening. Remember to watch out for the younger children and observe community curfews.

• Peer Helpers are reminded that there will be Block meetings today for all Peer Helpers.
• The printer in the Library is not working. We will make a further announcements if it becomes available today.
• All members of the Envirothon Team are asked to meet in Room M402 for a ten minute meeting at the beginning of lunch break. Discussion items include permission forms, competition preparation, and travel.
• Students and Teachers: SADD would like to invite you to join their “Take a Hand – Save a Life” Campaign by putting your signature on one of the many hand-prints on the upper main hallways. The SADD group encourages teachers to take a few minutes to take your classes to the hallway and by signing a hand-print, make a pledge to keep your friend safe. Special markers are available in the Library for participating classes. Thank you for your support!
• All Student Council members are reminded to go to the gym at afternoon break to get ready for the October Fest Events.
• There will not be a Debate Club meeting today after school.

This Friday, October 30th, UPEI’s Music Department will once again host their annual Haunted House. From 7pm until 11 pm on the night of Friday the 30th, you can come out and start off your Halloween by braving this House of Horrors located at the Steel Building on the UPEI campus! Cost is $4, with hot chocolate for sale beforehand. WARNING: The haunted house is NOT recommended for young children.

The winner of the $15 gift card at Chapters for the “Staff and Their Pets” bulletin board, with 7/9 pairs correct was Ms. Glenda McInnis. Not one participant got all the answers correct. In true school spirit, Ms. McInnis gave the card back. So, in a random draw, Christina Somers wins the card. Thanks, Ms. McInnis, and to all who participated.

The Million Minute Challenge has been a great success for yet another year. Collectively, Island students tallied a grand total of 1,343,426 minutes spent reading yesterday. Parkdale Elementary led all schools; however Honorable Mention went to Montague Regional High School who led the high school in minutes read per student. Mrs. Killeen sends a huge thank-you to all who participated in this event and demonstrated the importance of reading in our lives. We were up almost 10,000 minutes from last year with 45,095 minutes read! Way to go, staff and students!!

• Congratulations to the Ladies Field Hockey Team on your thrilling come from behind victory over Bluefield. Final score was 3 to 2. Scoring for Montague were Jenna MacLellan, Emily Jackson and Taylor Nicholson. Winning Keeper was Victoria Leard. The Gold Medal game is Wednesday (tomorrow) at 6:30 at UPEI. Come out and cheer the girls on. Team members should note that you have a meeting this morning at break in the gymnasium.
• The Men’s Soccer team lost their quarter final game to TOSH yesterday. Thanks, guys, for a great season!
• The Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams lost to Charlottetown Rural yesterday. The season winds up this week with playoffs next week.
• Team pictures for Men’s Soccer, Ladies’ Soccer, and Ladies’ Field Hockey will be taken on Wednesday at noon in the gymnasium. Make sure to have your team uniforms or warm-up jackets on for the photos.

Mrs. Killeen sends a special thank you to all students who filled out a ballot last week to show your support for National School Library Month. Congratulations to all free book winners. Today is Provincial School Library Day. In our classes, you’ll be accumulating as many minutes as possible, as our school participates in the 4th Annual Million Minutes Literacy Challenge (the entire province is trying to reach one million minutes read altogether). Let’s try to beat our total from last year (with 36,186 minutes read). By the way, last year we were the top high school in the province!! Let’s do it again!!

Students, be sure to get your guesses in for the “Staff and Their Pets” bulletin board. Contest ends at 12:30 pm today. The winner will receive a $25 gift card to Chapters Indigo Book Store. Total minutes read will be announced on Tuesday morning. Island wide results will be announced Tuesday afternoon! Mrs. Killeen thanks all staff and students for their participation and support in advance (especially when minutes are being collected during last block today).

• The Men’s and Women’s Cross Country team competed hard yesterday at Provincials. All runners represented the school very well. Congratulations to Matthew Glover who finished Third in the Juvenile Division. Mr. Killeen would like to thank all runners who participated this year.

An Annual Fall Frolic and Pumpkin Party is being presented by Parks Canada at the Greenwich Interpretation Centre on October 25, 2009, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Free admission will give you plenty of fun for the whole family. • Members of Women’s Volleyball team have no practice tonight, but are reminded that you leave for Westisle at 11:15 tomorrow morning.
• The Women’s Soccer team played well in a 1-0 loss to Souris yesterday.
• The Red Rock Wrestling Club practices today from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Montague Consolidated School.

• The Ladies Field Hockey team will practice at the Indoor Soccer facility today at 4:00 p.m. There will be an important meeting today at 12:05 p.m. in the gymnasium.
• The Men’s Soccer team lost a close hard-fought contest to TOSH yesterday by the score of 2-1. Scoring for the Vikings was Darren Lundrigan. Once again, strong defensive play, led by Keeper Brett Byrne, helps the team prepare for the playoffs next week.
• The Cross Country Provincial Championships will be held on Thursday at Charlottetown Rural. Runners should see Mr. Killeen today at 11:40 in Room M307.
• Members of the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams should check with Mr. McKinnon at noon today.
• There will be no Ladies Soccer practice today.

Grads: Mount Allison University will be having an open house for interested students on their campus in Sackville, New Brunswick, on Friday, October 23. See Mr. Conohan for details.

Staff and Students: Next Monday, October 26, is School Library Day. As a school, we will be participating in the 4th Annual “Million Minutes Literacy Challenge” (but more details on that later). To lead up to it, Mrs. Killeen will be having daily book draws for free books (most with Halloween theme) all this week. To participate, fill in a ballot when you sign out a book. Titles of free books will be in the written announcements daily. Interested in increasing your chances to win?? Check out the bulletin board display and match the staff member with his or her pet(s). Winner of the “Staff and Their Pets” will be announced on School Library Day. Winner will receive a $15 gift card to Chapters Indigo.

Scholastic Teen Readers book orders for Christmas have arrived. Get your shopping done early and visit Mrs. Killeen in the library for a form. Order forms will be available to parents at interviews next week—put your hints out early!

• The Women’s Golf team played a great round of golf yesterday, claiming the Provincial Championship. Katlin Doyle won individual Gold, Emily Doyle won Silver, and Makala White won Bronze. Congratulations, girls!
• The Men’s Golf team battled hard and finished third at Provincials yesterday. Congratulations to Connor Lea, Jimmy Lannigan, Greg Gillis and Jalen MacLeod for your hard work.
• The Women’s Soccer team came from behind and tied Souris 2-2 yesterday. Hard work and motivated play was displayed by all players. Excellent work by Leanne Wade, Morgan Martin and Laura Wisenener!
• The Men’s Soccer team plays Charlottetown Rural at 5:00 this evening. Bus leaves from the Main Student Entrance at 3:45 p.m.
• The Ladies’ Field Hockey team plays the Rural at 5:00 as well. The bus leaves from the Main Student Entrance at 3:45 p.m.
• The Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams play Colonel Gray at 5:00 today. The bus will be leaving the Main Student Entrance at 3:45 p.m.
• Our Women’s Soccer team are home to Kensington at 4:30 p.m. Ladies should be at the Complex ready to go by 4:00 p.m.
• On Friday and Saturday, the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams are participating in the Volleyball tournament at Colonel Gray. Bus will leave the school on Friday at11:00 a.m. and on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

Deathball continues today. Students in the following home rooms should now proceed to the gymnasium: Mr. Brothers, Ms. Beck, Ms. MacDonald, Ms. Burrows, Ms. Flynn, Ms. MacKinnon, and Ms. Nabuurs.

Students are reminded that there are no classes on Thursday and Friday of this week, while teachers attend their annual convention. Classes will resume on Monday, October 19.
