Happy Birthday to Devan Rayner and Mr. Matt Killeen!

If there are Grade Twelve students who haven’t yet applied to Holland College, the deadline is tomorrow. The Admissions Office will be open tomorrow, Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., if applicants wish to deliver applications, resumes, transcripts, etc. If anyone needs a transcript or an application, please see Mr. Armstrong today.

Today is Super Hero and Cartoon Character Day. Student Council hopes you all are cartoony and super! Student Council members who are counting costumes are asked to meet at the top of the stairs directly following announcements. Student Council members are also reminded to be in the gym at 12:00 sharp!

Today’s Food Fact from your SNAC Committee: A portion of the water you drink has already been drunk by someone else, maybe several times over!!

Teachers: Please consider volunteering to supervise a fan bus into UPEI on Monday evening. If there is enough interest, and if enough teachers are willing to travel on the bus and also be present at the game on Monday, we could be sending a fan bus in to cheer on our basketball teams.

  • Any staff who are interested in contributing to the IWK Telethon should see Mr. Nicholson today.
  • Matchmaker results will be sold today at break and lunch in the Student Lounge. Cost is $2 each.
  • The Men’s Basketball team will be leaving at 12:15 today. Guys should be at the Main Student Entrance, ready to go, by that time!
  • There will be a practice for Men’s Rugby today at 3:15 in the gym. All new players are invited to come out to get some early training before the season begins.
  • The Library will be closed to students for Grade Ten Library stations today and Monday, March 2. No exceptions during this time. Thanks to all students and staff for your cooperation during these two days for this busy venture.
  • Winter Carnival activities will start today promptly at 12:30 p.m. in the gym. Students will go their C Block classes for attendance and then will be called down to the gym.
  • Students who have Physical Education in A and D Blocks will be going to the rink today. B Block will be travelling to the rink next Wednesday.

Photo Club is starting up again next Thursday. Get your favourite photos printed and see you next Thursday after school in M307.

Please don’t bring any type of kit bag; they are not allowed. Purses will be searched for alcohol or any other substance. Spectators who are students and who are caught with anything will be asked to leave the premises and parents contacted.

Congratulations to Mark Nabuurs, Matthew Nabuurs, Keagan Matheson and skip Kevin Rice who won at the Under 17 Provincial Curling Championships held over this past weekend. The guys have now qualified to compete in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland.

Today is “Spirit Day”. Hope you all have school colors or clothing on. Student Council members will be around during A Block to do a tally in classes. This is a reminder that “Twister” will be happening today at lunch. Participants are asked to be at the gym at 11:40. Game starts at 11:45. Student Council members who are helping out are asked to be at the gym at 11:15.

The Student Council would like to thank all teachers and support staff for your attendance at the Hypnotist show last evening. Student Council members are reminded that you are to be at school tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. to start making pancakes.

Teachers should note that the Teachers’ Resource Centre will close at 3:30 p.m. today, so that staff can attend the ESD Teacher-Librarians’s support group meeting.

The Kings County Midget AAA Kings host the Summerside Capitals in the deciding game in the best of five series. This game goes tonight at 8:00 p.m. at Iceland Arena in Montague.

The Confederation Centre of the Arts will be conducting auditions on Sunday, March 1, looking for dynamic individuals (between 16 and 23 years of age) who are aspiring musical theatre students. Successful candidates will be selected to perform in the 2009 Young Company performance and training program offered this summer at Confederation Centre. Happy Birthday to Michele Hynes and Kimberly Myers! We extend belated greetings to Parker Matheson, Simone Kemp, Alex MacKinnon, Justin Wilson, Aaron Fitzpatrick, Adam Fitzpatrick, Kyle Pollard and Melissa Woods who celebrated their birthdays over the weekend.

The Men’s Basketball team beat Westile on Friday night 84 – 59. Damon Ansems had a game high 44 points. Jay Shaw had 13 points and Kyle Jenkins had 10 points.

The Men’s Basketball team then beat Morell on Saturday afternoon 52 – 48. Damon Ansems had 19 points, Duff MacDonald had 13 points and Jay Shaw had 7 points.

OREO competition on the weekend went very well. Both teams made it to the final round of presentations. Team #1 (John MacCormac, Nicole Butler, Laura MacRae and Tyler Morrison) was awarded the “Sportsmanship” award . Team #2 (Hope Klein, Quiller Sharratt, Crystal Greencorn, and Mallory King) placed third and won a $500 prize! Thank you for a great weekend students… Ms. Malone and Ms. MacLeod will never forget the fun times they had!!

Congratulations to Jenna MacLellan, Justin MacPhee and Matthew Penny who represented MRHS at the Annual Rotary Club Youth Parliament. Jenna served as Fisheries Critic, Justin as Minister of Transportation and Public Works, and Matt as the Provincial Treasurer.

Attention Members of the Mr. Lea’s first semester Global Issues class: You’ve Got Mail! The return letters from your twinning school in Kenya have arrived! Please go to W304 during breaks or lunch to get your letter. Another shipment of letters will be leaving the Island to go to Kenya at the end of this week so pick up your letter and write a response today.

Students should note that this morning’s A and B Block Phys. Ed. classes will not be going to the rink this morning. These classes will be rescheduled. C and D Block Phys. Ed. classes will still be attending the rink today.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada, PEI Branch, needs volunteers. This would qualify you for the Community Service Bursary, and you will receive $5 per volunteer hour towards your college or university education! You will be working with the Kidney Foundation to promote organ donation, to raise awareness regarding kidney disease, and to inform the public of the activities of the Kidney Foundation. Happy Birthday to Tyler MacEwen and Ryan White!

The Men’s Basketball team beat Kinkora last night 68 – 47. Damon Ansems and Duff MacDonald both had 18 points. Kyle Jenkins had 16 points.

The Women’s Basketball team outscored Kinkora last night, with a final of 61 – 28. Katelyn Powers had 20 points, and Leanne Wade, Stephanie Wade and Anne Brown all had 8 points. The ladies have a busy weekend ahead of them, playing Westisle Friday at 3:30 and Morell on Saturday at noon. Don’t forget about noise maker night on Monday when the basketball teams play their last regular season home games – women at 5 pm and men at 7 pm.

Welcome to Amy Beck, Donna White, Amanda Purchase, Denise McGillivray, and Katelyn Greene who are guest teachers with us today.

Parent Teacher Social: Parents and students are reminded of the Parent Teacher Social at 7:00 pm this evening. Everyone is asked to meet in the cafeteria. Student schedules will be available. Parents will then have an opportunity to attend a “mini” class with each of the students’ teachers. During this time, the teacher will provide you with an outline of the course ant the course expectations. MRHS student council members will be wearing their distinctive t-shirts, and will be available to help parents find their class.

The Men’s Basketball team beat Charlottetown Rural last night 87-58. Damon Ansems had a game high 27 points. Jay Shaw had 14 points, Erik Hameline and Duff MacDonald both had 13 points. Our MRHS Men are in first place in the AA division.

In Ladies’ Basketball last night, the ladies outscored Charlottetown Rural 65-40.  Katelyn Powers had 32 points and Marissa Wisener had 16 points.  The girls play at home again on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

Playoff Midgett AAA Hockey is taking place this evening at Iceland Arena – Kings County hosts Summerside Capitals at 8:10 p.m. This is game one of the best of five series.

Choir members should note that Pizza Delight tickets must all be passed in to Ms. McInnis by the end of A Block or you will be paying for them yourselves.

Peer Helpers will be doing training today and will be absent for the full day. Teachers, please do not mark them absent. All Peer Helpers should go to Ms. Beck’s room immediately after announcements.

Home room teachers are asked to go over next week’s Winter Carnival activities with students today.

“Spread the Net” will be holding a Bake Sale during first break, lunch and second break on Wednesday (tomorrow).

Library monitors are meeting for five minutes on Wednesday at the start of lunch.

There will be a SWITCH meeting on Thursday at lunch (11:38 a.m) in Mme Flynn’s room. All members are urged to attend.

Guidance Announcements:

  • Grade Twelve students who haven’t yet applied to the colleges or universities of their choice should do so before the end of February and see Mr. Armstrong about sending official transcripts. The first mail-out of transcripts is happening today and Mr. Armstrong would like to get as many transcripts as possible in the mail, so get your requests in if you haven’t already done so.
  • A recruiter from Holland College will be in the Guidance Office on Thursday of this week from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to speak to potential college students, help with the application process, meet with potential college athletes, etc.
  • Students wishing to apply to UNB can take advantage of “Admissions on the Spot” at the Delta Prince Edward in Charlottetown on Thursday, February 19, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Admissions officers will be on site; and if you present an official transcript in a sealed envelope, a completed application form, and the application fee ($45), you can be admitted “on the spot”.
  • RCMP are recruiting on Thursday, February 19, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Cotton Centre, 57 Bunbury Road in Stratford.

Europe Travellers: Mme Flynn is still looking for several pink sheets from Europe travellers. Please submit these a.s.a.p.

The Grade Twelve Ski trip has been postponed – the date is not yet determined (not this week for sure). New date will be announced shortly.

Grade Twelve students interested in Saint Thomas University should note that an Admissions Officer will be here in the Guidance Office between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon to do on site admissions. Students interested in this service are asked to see Mr. Armstrong immediately after announcements, so that the official transcripts needed will be ready by 10:00 a.m.

Today’s Meetings :

  • Library monitors are reminded of your meeting scheduled for today at 12:00 noon. Please bring your lunches.
  • There is an OREO meeting at lunch break.
  • Students are reminded that there are fun activities planned for lunch break in Mrs. Beck’s room. The Wii will be set up and plenty of other games to try! Check it out!
  • Walking Club is a “go” today. Mme Flynn will see you at the front doors at 11:40 dressed for the weather!
  • There is a brief Student Council meeting today at the first of lunch break.
  • There will be a “Spread the Net” meeting at 12:00 noon in Room W307.
  • Europe travellers – if you haven’t picked up your Euros at CIBC, please due so today!
  • All Choir members must give your tickets and money for the spaghetti dinner to Ms. McInnis today! Note that there won’t be Women’s Ensemble rehearsal today.

The Men’s and Ladies’ Basketball teams will be playing Charlottetown Rural tonight at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. The games will be played here at home.

Students and teachers are reminded of the Parent-Teacher Social scheduled for tomorrow evening, Tuesday, February 17, at 7:00 p.m.

There are two wonderful programs/opportunities for students wanting to improve their French. One is the Explore program (five week intensive French at universities across the country); the other is the Summer Work Exchange program where you work in Quebec for six weeks. Deadlines are approaching, so see Mme Flynn or Mme McLane if you are interested.

Grade Twelve students interested in and involved in singing, acting, or dance, should note that the Canadian College of Performing Arts is holding auditions on Saturday, March 7th in Halifax. Please see the Guidance Office bulletin board for details.

Grade Eleven and Twelve students looking for volunteer hours can volunteer with the Kidney Foundation. As March is Kidney Health month, volunteers are urgently needed. Please see the Guidance Office bulletin board for details.

If possible, the grade 12 ski trip will be rescheduled.
