    Buses Resume on Monday

To: Parents and Guardians of Students in E.S.D.

    From: Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald

    Date: Friday, May 9, 2008

Subject: School Bus Services to Resume on Monday, May 12.

Transportation services for all students in the Eastern School District are expected to be in place for Monday, May 12th. The School District is confident that the inspection of busses, the repairs to busses and the addition of new busses has been accomplished with the safety of our students in mind. Parents and students will see the bussing system start up with no changes to pick up and drop off times. The only change will be the number on the school bus picking up some students. The change in bus numbers will be communicated to schools and the bus numbers will be located on the bus windows.

During the week of May 12 - May 16, busses will not be used for after school extra-curricular activities. This will allow the time to add our back-up busses to the fleet.

If any unexpected changes are required for Monday morning, announcements will be carried on the local radio stations and on the District website. ( www.edu.pe.ca/esd)

At this time, I thank all students, parents, staff and members of the public for their patience during our change in bus service. To all those who have been involved in going the extra mile to ensure the safety of our children, I applaud your tireless efforts over the last few days.

    Changes affecting Montague Students:

Bus 425 has been removed from service, this bus will be replaced with a new International bus on a temporary basis only. A sign will be placed in the new bus window to help identify the bus to the students.

Bus 475 has been removed, this bus will be replaced with a new bus, sign will be in the window.

All other Montague runs will remain the same.

    School Bus Service Interrupted - May 8 & 9

PEI School bus service will not be offered by the three Island school boards on Thursday, May 8, and Friday, May 9, 2008, while the Department of Transportation and Public Works conducts an inspection of school buses. This decision resulted from a structural inspection conducted this week by the Department of Transportation and Public Works where structural deficiencies were found in some older school buses.

Based on these findings, all school buses will be taken out of service until a more thorough inspection can be done.

Education and Early Childhood Development Minister, Gerard Greenan, said the decision to remove the buses was made in the interest of student safety. “The buses will not run until we are satisfied with the results of the completed inspections. At the same time, we feel it is important for classes to continue. We regret the inconvenience this may cause for parents but we know that this is what parents would want, and they will appreciate the reasons behind it.”

For more information, parents and students can check the Department of Education website: www.gov.pe.ca/education/

Students travelling on Bus 425 (Wayne Dooks) will go home on Bus 438 (John Daley) .
